Hyperprolactinemia is the most common cause of hypogonadotropic anovulation in women. It is related to an alteration of pulsatile GnRH secretion. This gonadotropic deficiency has been proposed to result from direct suppression of prolactin (PRL) on GnRH release but its mechanism remains unknown.
